Stephen Correia, PhD

Dr. Correia is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. His clinical appointment is at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Providence where he serves as the neuropsychologist. Dr. Correia's reserach is based mainly in the Memory and Aging Program. He uses diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) and other MRI techniques to study the cognitive and behavioral correlates of white matter pathways in the brain. This research focuses on patients with vascular cognitive impairment and early Alzheimer's disease. He also collaborates with several other researchers using DTI in a variety of conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and HIV-1 infection. He maintains a close collaborative relationship with Dr. David Laidlaw in the Department of Computer Science at Brown University for the development of new DTI visualization and analysis techniques. A secondary research focus is using brain imaging to study combat-related traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Correia earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Rhode Island where he studied under David Faust, Ph.D. He completed his pre-doctoral internship at the Malcolm Randall Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. He completed clinical and research fellowships at Brown under the supervision of Drs. Stephen Salloway and Paul Malloy. In his spare time, Dr. Correia is an avid baseball fan and cyclist.
